Welcome to another First Line Friday. Today I’m sharing my The Divine Proverb of Streusel review. But first, the details. I devoured this book, no pun intended. Seriously, I purchased it and had it finished the next day. It is that un-put-downable, even at 324 pages. Published by Revell and written by Sara Brunsvold, who I am quickly learning I enjoy a lot.

MY THE DIVINE PROVERB OF STREUSEL REVIEW:

Complete honesty. I bought this book because of streusel. I mean, who doesn’t love streusel on top of a piece of coffee cake or a muffin? I’m a fan of baking and reading. A story that can combine both of these automatically has my attention. While the title may have intrigued me and the streusel may have prompted my purchase, the story Sara Brunsvold stirs inside the pages is what kept me reading long past my bedtime and during hours when I should have been focusing on other things.

Nikki flees to her late grandparent’s farmhouse when life crashes in on her. She needs answers, needs to understand who she is and what she wants. What she finds is a loving uncle with hurts of his own and a family cookbook/journal with wisdom from scripture and her family’s past. Driven to connect with those who’ve gone before, Nikki begins cooking the recipes.

Legacies, hurts, understanding, forgiveness, healing, and family all play central roles in this beautifully told story of one woman finding her heritage and choosing where her path should lead going forward. And like some of the included recipes, the best lessons take time and effort, and  the results aren’t always what’s expected.

The characters are wonderful and real. The town is a perfect portrayal of rural, small-town life. The problems, while they could bog down the reader, are countered with enough lightness to keep the story from being too heavy. The Divine Proverb of Streusel is a story that will give you the itch to know more about your own legacy and stay with you in the best way possible after you reach the end.
