Main Character Monday: Interview with Houdini
Main Character Monday: Interview with Houdini
Welcome to today’s Main Character Monday interview with Houdini from Out-of-the-Box Valentines by Amy R. Anguish. This story is one of four novellas included in the Pets Amore novella collection from Scrivenings Press. Pets Amore is four Valentine’s Day themed rom-coms in one book.
Welcome, Houdini. Usually those I interview have more than one name, interesting. Tell me a little about yourself?
I have tan hair, pink ears, and black eyes.
Again, a little unusual, but we’ll go with it. Tell me something about you that readers may find surprising?
I’m a hamster.
Ah, that makes a bit more sense now. I hope you’re an animal with enough world experience to answer the rest of my questions. What is your favorite Bible verse and why?
Proverbs 12:10 “The righteous care for the needs of their animals, but the kindest acts of the wicked are cruel.” It says to be a good person, you have to take care of your pets.
I can see where that would be appealing to you. Is there someone from the Bible that you relate to most?
Maybe Balaam’s donkey. I’d love to be able to talk in real life. This bouncing around on the keyboard to type is hard for someone with short legs like mine.
Ha ha. I can see where that could be problematic. The fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Is there one of these characteristics you find is easier to show than the others?
I’m pretty gentle and patient unless you squeeze me too hard.
I bet kids love you, being gentle and all. But I can see where they might get a little too excited and not take the care they should. Is there a fruit of the spirit that is more challenging than the others?
Self-control. When I get on that wheel, I just have to run until I fall off. I can’t help it. It’s like an addiction.
I don’t think you’re alone in that. Well, maybe the wheel part. But I know a lot of people that pick up their phones and just scroll, scroll, scroll like they can’t help themselves. Maybe we all need a little more self-control. If you could give one message to those reading this interview, what would you tell them?
Just because hamsters are related to all the other rodents of the world doesn’t mean we’re evil. I refuse to be treated badly just because I’m a distant cousin to a rat. We’re much cuter.
I have to agree. Hamsters are super cute. I hope you are always treated well. Now, let’s have some light-hearted questions. If you could visit just one place your entire life, where would you go?
Hmm. I’ve already been to school, all over Rylan’s house, and to church (but don’t tell Rylan’s mom about that one because she doesn’t know). I guess I’d like to go to the store. Rylan says it has everything.
If you could choose one talent you don’t already have, what talent would you choose?
Well, I’m a good climber. And runner. And I’m amazing at staying up all night long. What would I want to do? Maybe to dance as well as Rylan does. Kid has some really great moves.
Dark or Milk Chocolate? I don’t think hamsters are supposed to have milk … or chocolate. How about a nice carrot? Or the end of a head of lettuce.
Beach or Mountains? Mountains. I don’t think the sand would feel good on my feet.
Sweet Tea or Lemonade? Same with above. What is it with humans needing all these choices for food?
If you had only three words, how would you describe Amy R. Anguish? Sneaky, Funny, Sweet
Sounds like there’s a bit of a story in that description. Thank you, Houdini for joining us today. And thank you, readers, for joining me for this Main Character Monday interview with Houdini. Keep reading for more about Amy R. Anguish and Pets Amore.

“Out-of-the-box Valentines” by Amy R. Anguish—Kimberly Winters loves being a kindergarten teacher on Valentine’s Day. But she never expects one of her students to show up with his hamster … or his uncle. Trey Jones doesn’t mind helping out his sick sister by dropping off Rylan at school. Staying to take his sister’s place as “room mom” is a whole different deal, but how can he turn down the adorable teacher? It’s a day full of unexpected surprises for both of them, including each learning to think out of the box when it comes to romance.
“No Butts About It” by Linda Fulkerson—When real estate consultant and confirmed bachelor Charles Sterling’s brother and sister-in-law are killed in a car crash, they leave him a surprise in their will—their five-year-old daughter. Enamored by a character in a popular children’s book, the girl has one request for her uncle-turned-father: a pet goat. As Blossom Clarke struggles to fulfill her deceased father’s dream of developing her family’s property into a goat rescue center, she has no time for city dwellers. But when Charles Sterling shows up to buy a goat, that dream borders on becoming a nightmare. Especially when his company discovers her property checks off all the boxes requested by a high-power client.
“Pegboards, Parrots, and Pickup Lines” by Heather Greer—Charlotte Herring wants one thing—to prove she can succeed on her own. But to avoid failure, she needs the people of Brookview to accept her and her antique store. For years, Tyson Abbott’s only goal was to realize his father’s dreams for the family hardware store. After meeting the town’s newest resident, he adds a new goal—helping Charlotte find her place in Brookview. With a parrot named Cracker Jack paving the way for their partnership to become a romance, Charlotte and Tyson see more than the dreams for their stores coming true. But when their plans conflict and past hurts resurface, will they lose their dreams and each other?
“Snowflakes and Puppy Love” by Beth E. Westcott—When Cooper Stiles walks in the door of Archer Books, his stunning blue eyes and friendly smile pull at Brianna Kinney’s heart. He’s the first man she’s attracted to since becoming a widow. The new clerk in Robin Archer’s bookstore catches Cooper’s eye. Brianna’s love for children and her cute puppy are captivating, but he doesn’t have time for dating. His current priority is caring for his nephew and niece while their mother, his dead brother’s wife, fulfills a work commitment overseas. And he’s not going to get caught up in any more match-making.
